What people pay. Embrace cites the American Animal Hospital Association's 2025 averages of $62.44 a month for dogs and $32.21 for cats, and says most of its own customers paid $20 to $70 a month for a dog and $10 to $30 for a cat in 20261. Species, breed, age, address and the deductible and limit you choose all move the price.
Enroll early. Both insurers exclude pre-existing conditions. Embrace counts anything noted before the waiting period ends, even without a vet visit, and says a curable condition can become eligible after a year free of symptoms and treatment2. Pets Best also excludes conditions that start during waiting periods3. A young, healthy pet has the shortest list of exclusions.
Accident only or accident and illness. Pets Best sells an accident-only plan from $6 a month for cats and $9 for dogs, regardless of age and breed; it does not cover illnesses such as cancer or diabetes3. Accident and illness plans cost more and cover more.
Routine care is separate. Base policies do not pay for checkups and vaccines; Embrace lists routine care among its exclusions2. Pets Best sells two tiers of routine care cover as an add-on, at enrollment, within 30 days or at renewal4.
Pet insurance is a growing market: NAPHIA reports 7.6 million pets insured in North America at the end of 2025, up 8.5% from 20245.
